Vidarbha, Amravati: Authorities in Amravati district are inspecting 6,408 water sources to protect citizens from the threat of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), which can be caused by polluted drinking water. Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sanjita Mohapatra has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone neglecting their duties during the inspections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Although Amravati has not reported any GBS cases yet, other parts of Maharashtra have seen patients suffering from symptoms like stomach ache and diarrhoea due to contaminated water. A recent survey found that water in several regions of the state is unsafe to drink, with some areas showing no chlorine in the water at all.
To address this, the state's Water Supply and Sanitation Department has ordered checks and disinfection of water sources across the state. The local ZP administration is also taking action by cleaning water sources, checking for leaks, disinfecting water, and testing its safety. Public awareness campaigns are being launched, and water samples are being collected from tap water supplies in villages, schools, and anganwadis.
