Nagpur, India: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has announced that it will file a petition in the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court against the amended Waqf Act, which recently became law after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu. The board claims the new provisions are unconstitutional and could harm the rights of the Muslim community.

To raise awareness and voice its opposition, the AIMPLB has launched a nationwide campaign called ‘Waqf Bachao Abhiyan’. The campaign began on April 10 and will continue until July 7, focusing on peaceful protests and legal action.

AIMPLB member Abdul Wahab Parekh strongly criticised the amended Act, calling it unconstitutional and alleging that it threatens the protection of Waqf properties. He said the changes could lead to the misuse or seizure of land and assets that belong to the Muslim community. He confirmed that the board would oppose the law through the courts and public awareness efforts.

As part of the campaign, similar legal petitions have been filed in other parts of the country. Nagpur is one of the latest cities where legal action is being planned.

Though there have been no major demonstrations in Nagpur yet, members of the Muslim community expressed their displeasure last week by wearing black armbands during Friday prayers. Peaceful protests may take place on Friday, April 11, although final details are yet to be confirmed.
