Nagpur, India: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to introduce a new Rs197 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) in partnership with Kerala-based Keltron and the city's traffic police. The project aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city.
The first phase of the project will begin at 10 key locations, selected after a survey led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Archit Chandak. The system will use AI-powered traffic signals that adjust to traffic conditions in real-time, making travel faster. The system is expected to reduce travel time by up to 48% and increase average speeds by 62%.
During the trial phase, speed radars and LED message boards will be set up at key junctions. Once successful, the system will expand to all 161 traffic signals in Nagpur, with the full rollout expected within 10 months.
The system will also include technologies like automatic number plate recognition and red-light violation detection. CCTV cameras will monitor traffic, and the system will automatically issue fines for violations.
To ensure smooth installation, NMC, Keltron, and traffic police are working with other agencies to avoid damaging underground utilities. Keltron will design, install, and maintain the system for five years.
This new traffic management system is expected to make Nagpur's roads safer and reduce traffic congestion.
