Nagpur, India: A Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Mumbai for staying illegally in India, and police are investigating whether he was involved in the March 17 Nagpur violence, an official said.

The Crime Branch Unit II arrested Azizul Nizanul Rahman (29) from Dadar on Wednesday. Rahman, a resident of Hasanbaug, Nagpur, is suspected to have been in Nagpur during the violence and had shifted to Dadar a few days ago. He works as a daily wage labourer and admitted to obtaining an Aadhaar card using fake documents.

“We are checking his mobile tower location to verify his presence in Nagpur at the time of the violence. Details of his arrest have also been shared with Nagpur police,” the official said on Thursday.

The violence erupted in central Nagpur on March 17 after rumours spread that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests by VHP and Bajrang Dal demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

More than 110 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, including key accused Fahim Khan. Investigations are ongoing to determine Rahman’s involvement in the incident.
