Nagpur, India- The Central Jail is improving its security by installing 796 CCTV cameras throughout the facility. This move aims to enhance surveillance, prevent illegal activities, and create a safer environment for everyone. The installation of advanced biometric access control systems in each yard is also a key part of modernizing inmate management. These systems will help prevent unauthorized movement between different sections of the jail, reducing conflicts and ensuring better control.
CCTV cameras are being placed at important spots like entrance gates, corridors, and yards. A dedicated control centre will monitor these cameras in real-time, allowing prison authorities to keep a close watch on inmate activities and respond quickly to any security issues. The goal is to track inmate movements thoroughly and improve overall security within the jail.
This decision comes after past incidents of unauthorized activities, such as the use of contraband items like mobile phones. The new surveillance system is expected to deter and detect such activities. The installation is ongoing and should be completed in the coming months. Director General of the Prison Department, Amitabh Gupta, has been actively working with the state government to secure funding and support for this project.
Biometric Access Control at Nagpur Central Prison
Nagpur Central Prison, which houses over 3,000 inmates, is also enhancing its security with biometric access control systems at each of its six yards per circle. With about 500 inmates in each yard, these systems will prevent unauthorized movement between different sections, reducing conflicts and creating a more disciplined environment. This new measure will give the prison administration better control over inmate mobility and contribute to a safer, more orderly facility.
