In Sunday's 2-0 victory over Chelsea, Manchester City, the reigning champion, started their quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League crown. Erling Haaland celebrated his 100th appearance for the team with his 91st goal.

In the 18th and 84th minutes, respectively, Haaland and Mateo Kovacic gave his club the lead and made it a hard start for new Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca in his first game in charge.

Haaland scored for Chelsea after the team had a bright start when he received the ball on the edge of the box, cut past Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill, and dinked the ball past Robert Sanchez.

Despite yet another summer of lavish investment, Chelsea lacked this type of precision center-forward play for a large portion of the previous campaign and again on Sunday.

Nicolas Jackson, a striker for Chelsea, had a goal disallowed shortly before halftime for carelessly straying offside. In the 61st minute, he struck a close-range volley straight at City goalkeeper Ederson, and was substituted by 18-year-old Marc Guiu.

Nevertheless, Maresca, the former Man City assistant to Pep Guardiola, showed encouraging indicators. Romeo Lavia earned his first league start after missing the majority of the previous season due to injury, and he looked good playing in a midfield tandem with Moises Caicedo. However, none of Chelsea's nine summer additions began the match.
