The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced that China, Pakistan, and Spain will host the Olympic Qualification Tournaments for hockey from January 13 to 21 next year. Valencia in Spain will host one men's and one women's competition, while Lahore in Pakistan will host the other men's event. Changzhou in China is set to hold the other women's tournament. Each tournament will consist of eight teams, making a total of 16 teams per gender.
In the women's tournaments, European teams will have the most representation with eight spots, while Asia, the Americas, and Oceania will have four, three, and one spots respectively. Africa will not have a women's team in the tournaments but will have its own qualifying event in Johannesburg from October 29 to November 5. In the men's tournaments, Africa will have one spot, putting it on par with Oceania. Europe will have the most representation with seven spots, followed by Asia with five and the Americas with two.
The top three teams from each tournament will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, joining the host nation France and winners of each continental championship taking place from August to November this year.
This marks Pakistan's first hosting of an international event since the Champions Trophy in 2004, with President Tayyab Ikram playing a central role in the decision. The FIH expressed hope that hosting the Olympic qualifiers will help boost hockey in Pakistan. Valencia has previously hosted tournaments for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, while China's hosting of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou served as a qualifier for London 2012.
The hockey events for the Paris 2024 Olympics are scheduled to take place at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir from July 27 to August 9. Belgium and The Netherlands will be aiming to defend their respective men's and women's titles from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
