A lot of people visited the theaters over the weekend to see Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Barbie did better than Oppenheimer, at least in India, with its opening weekend take of Rs 49 cr. Barbie, though, brought in Rs 18.65 crore. The Cillian Murphy-starrer made Rs 7 cr (early estimates) on its first Monday after houseful shows over the weekend, a rarity in post-pandemic times.
On its first weekday, the Nolan movie achieved a 21.07% English occupancy, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The movie made Rs 14.5 crore in its Friday opening weekend, then Rs 17 crore on Saturday, and finally Rs 17.25 crore on Sunday. With this, the movie has earned a total of Rs. 55.75 cr. in India. The movie has made over 174 million dollars worldwide.
Oppenheimer has been performing marginally better than another significant Hollywood picture this year, Vin Diesel's Fast X, which also enjoyed a successful run in theaters. However, it fell short of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's opening weekend gross of Rs 64.80 cr.
The historical drama Oppenheimer tells the tale of American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and how he came to be known as the inventor of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy plays the title character in the movie, and Emily Blunt plays his wife. A crucial part in the film is also played by Robert Downey Jr.
Everywhere in the world has been praising the movie. A portion of social media users are unhappy about a scene from the movie Oppenheimer where the title character reads words from the Bhagavad Gita while appearing to have sex. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has been contacted by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur to provide an explanation as to why the film was approved with the sequence in it.
