Nagpur, India- After 24 adjournments and another delay in the Ritika Maloo Ram Jhula accident case, both the victims' families and the citizens of Nagpur have been furious due to the slow pace of justice and getting dates by dates. On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis promised swift and strict action in the case.
Recently, a Porsche accident in Pune made national news, which put Fadnavis in a position where he needed to manage the situation carefully. When asked about the delays in the Ram Jhula case, Fadnavis told the Media, "We will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice." Many citizens had been questioning why Fadnavis had not spoken up about the Ram Jhula case, which led to protests. These protests highlighted issues like flaws in the investigation, preferential treatment for some, and how easily the accused were able to get bail.
In Pune, Fadnavis also talked to the media about rethinking the rules for allowing pubs and bars in residential areas. He stressed the importance of cracking down on drunk driving, especially in areas with many bars. He also called for strict action against those who break the rules and said that pubs should check the age of their customers to prevent underage drinking.
Nagpur's Commissioner of Police, Ravinder Singal, has been taking action against bars and pubs since February. He issued notifications under Criminal Procedure Code 144, which requires pubs to inform the police about any problems that happen on their premises. Singal mentioned that they have taken action against seven bars and pubs so far. One of these actions includes a proposal to cancel the license of a bar involved in a case at Dhantoli police station.
C P Singal also said that pubs and bars have been asked to install CCTV cameras and keep the recordings. There are about 375 licensed bars in the city, and they are all being closely monitored by the police.
The court will soon decide on Ritika Maloo, who was granted temporary bail protection. Meanwhile, the families of Mohd Hussain Mustafa and Mohd Ateef Ziya, who lost their lives in the Ram Jhula accident, are still waiting for justice to be served in Nagpur.
