The eagerly awaited project to widen Old Bhandara Road has finally kicked off, though the project's completion date remains uncertain.
The estimated construction cost for this 3-kilometer road is 52 crores, but the compensation cost for land acquisition is a staggering 350 crores. Currently, only 300 meters of land have been acquired by the Public Works Department (PWD) for the project, spanning from Hansapuri to Satranjipura.
With the challenging task of land acquisition still in progress, the road widening project is facing challenges for the NH division of the Public Works Department (PWD). This ambitious project encompasses widening roads in areas like Hansapuri, Ganjakhet, Itwari, and Satranjipura.
The 3-kilometer road stretch from Mayo Hospital to Lakadganj to Sunil Hotel will have a width of 18 meters. At present, this congested 3-kilometer segment of old Nagpur poses difficulties for city buses to navigate.
Providing more project details, sources revealed that the road's width between Mayo Hospital and Hansapuri will be 18 meters, with two lanes of 7 meters each. Similarly, the road's width from Bagdadiya Square to Sunil Hotel will be 30 meters. Work on widening the road from Mayo Hospital to Hansapuri has commenced.
Although the project's tender was issued in 2019, it faced delays due to a lack of compensation funds. Now, the project is back on track with 350 crores approved for compensation. It's worth noting that the state government will cover 70% of the compensation cost (237.30 crores) in collaboration with the NMC.
In addition, according to official sources within the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, following a project survey conducted in 2018-19, a fresh survey was carried out, and a new proposal was submitted to the government. The work is set to continue without further hindrance.
