In a recent development, the absence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Rajkumar Ranjan Singh from the no-confidence debate in the Lok Sabha has raised eyebrows. The senior Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, has highlighted this issue, questioning why Singh, the sole Union Minister of State (MoS) and BJP representative from Manipur, has not been given an opportunity by his own party to address concerns related to Manipur's interests in Parliament.
The ongoing debate revolves around a motion of no-confidence against the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This motion, brought forward by the opposition, aims to prompt Prime Minister Modi to discuss the situation in the state during parliamentary sessions.
Taking to Twitter, Jairam Ramesh expressed his concerns, stating, "Several ministers have spoken during the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha. However, it's puzzling that Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the only BJP MP from Manipur Inner Parliamentary constituency, has not been given a chance by the party to voice the concerns of Manipur in Parliament."
Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh's absence from the parliamentary proceedings is significant, especially considering the challenges he has faced. His private residence was targeted by mobs on two separate occasions. The first incident occurred on May 25, when a mob attempted to breach his residence while he was inside. Subsequently, on June 16, an arson attack resulted in the destruction of two security vehicles and a private vehicle parked at his residence. Following this incident, Singh openly criticized the law and order situation in Manipur, labelling it a "total failure." He criticized the leadership of the N Biren Singh-led state government for its inability to maintain law and order, despite the Central government's support in the form of increased security measures.
Singh's background is noteworthy. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished career in academia. He served as the chairman of the BJP's state vision document committee and held the position of party spokesperson. Singh's academic journey includes an Honours degree from Dhanamanjury College, Imphal, and postgraduate studies in Geography from Gauhati University. He later completed his PhD in Geography from the same institution. He contributed significantly to education, serving as a lecturer at Ideal Girls' College and later as a professor at the Department of Earth Sciences in Manipur University.
In light of these developments, the absence of Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh from the no-confidence debate has drawn attention and raised questions about the BJP's stance on allowing its own representative to address the concerns of Manipur in the national Parliament. As the debate continues, the voice of Manipur remains unrepresented, prompting further discussions about the democratic process and the representation of regional interests at the national level.
