Nagpur: A contractor lost ₹34 lakh after being tricked by a man who falsely promised him a contract to build foundations for 100 BSNL mobile towers. The fraud came to light after the victim, Swapnil Moreshwar Jangde, a resident of Aashiana Society, Motibag, filed a complaint against Vijay Madhukar Meshram, a resident of Tulip Apartment, Laxmi Nagar.
According to the police, Vijay gained Swapnil’s trust through a mutual friend about a year and a half ago. Claiming to have secured BSNL contracts, Vijay assured Swapnil that he had been awarded the project to construct mobile tower foundations. He demanded an advance payment to finalise the deal and collected ₹33.94 lakh from Swapnil.
However, after receiving the money, Vijay neither provided the contract nor returned the funds. Swapnil made several attempts to contact him, but Vijay kept avoiding him. Realising he had been scammed, Swapnil approached Pachpaoli Police Station and lodged a complaint.
The police have registered a case of cheating against Vijay Meshram and have launched an investigation into the matter.
