Crimes Against Women Rise: 297 Rape Cases Reported in 2024

Nagpur, India: Crime in Nagpur has increased over the past three years. According to official data, crimes rose from 7,805 in 2022 to 10,074 in 2024. Even though the police have solved most cases, the rising crime numbers are a serious concern.
More Murders and Violent Crimes
Violent crimes like murder and attempted murder have gone up.
- Murders increased by 36.9%, from 65 in 2022 to 88 in 2024.
- Attempted murders almost doubled, rising from 102 in 2022 to 192 in 2024.
This trend shows a worrying rise in violent crimes in the city.
Increase in Robbery and Vehicle Theft
Robberies jumped by 40% in 2023 but then dropped by 17% in 2024. However, the number of stolen vehicles keeps going up.
- 1,553 vehicles were stolen in 2022.
- This increased to 1,947 in 2024, showing that vehicle thieves are still very active.
More Crimes Against Women
Crimes against women have also gone up:
- Rape cases rose from 250 in 2022 to 297 in 2024.
- Molestation cases slightly dropped, from 506 in 2023 to 499 in 2024.
These numbers show the need for better protection for women in the city.
Police Taking Action
Nagpur Police have increased their efforts to control crime.
- Legal action was taken against 12,960 criminals in 2024, up from 8,962 in 2022.
- The police are using strong laws like MPDA and MCOCA to crack down on organised crime.
Other Crimes on the Rise
Several other crimes have also increased:
- Cheating cases rose from 500 in 2022 to 697 in 2024.
- Riot cases nearly doubled from 76 in 2022 to 141 in 2024.
- Kidnapping cases increased from 460 in 2022 to 535 in 2024.
Police Chief Says City is Safe
Nagpur Police Commissioner, Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, said that most violent crimes happen due to family disputes, not random attacks. He assured the public that all major crimes have been solved and that police are working hard to keep the city safe. He also said that efforts are being made to change Nagpur’s image as a crime-ridden city.
