Vidarbha, Maharashtra- In a big relief for the people, the Southwest Monsoon has arrived early in some parts of Vidarbha on June 11, which is four days earlier than the usual date. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), areas like Buldhana, Akola, Washim, and Yavatmal (Pusad) started experiencing monsoon rains on Tuesday. The monsoon is expected to spread to other parts of Vidarbha in the next 2-3 days.
Pravin Kumar, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) in Nagpur, explained, "The monsoon arrived in Vidarbha four days ahead of our predictions, which is good news. We are also monitoring the monsoon's progress in other areas, especially in West Vidarbha." The onset date for the Southwest Monsoon in Vidarbha was originally June 10, but it has now been revised to June 15. Even though the monsoon has started, the amount and spread of rain may decrease once it covers the entire region, Pravin Kumar noted.
Some weather experts say that people in Nagpur might have to wait until the third week of June for the monsoon to start there. The moisture that usually comes from the Bay of Bengal, which helps bring monsoon rains to Vidarbha, is currently weak. It is expected to get stronger after June 20. According to an expert, Nagpur may see some rain on June 18 and 19, with heavier rains likely after June 21. While rain isn't the only sign used to declare the start of the monsoon, the Weather Department might announce it soon.
The Weather Department also forecasts thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds in some isolated places in Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Vidarbha over the next 48 hours. Despite the start of the monsoon in some areas, most of Vidarbha will stay dry, with temperatures remaining high, around 40-41°C, for the next 2-3 days.
Last year, the Southwest Monsoon reached Vidarbha around June 27, which was 11 days later than the revised normal date. In 2022, the monsoon was only one day late, but this year it arrived four days early.
