Nagpur, India- Rahul Deshmukh, a close aide of former home minister Anil Deshmukh and a senior leader of the Shetkari Kamgar Paksha (Shekap) party, was arrested in Nagpur for inciting violence against a community following a young woman's suicide.
Early Friday morning, the Katol police in Nagpur rural arrested Rahul Deshmukh. He is accused of provoking hostility towards a specific community after a young woman took her own life earlier this month. Katol, which is about 60 km from Nagpur, saw partial shutdowns led by supporters of Rahul Deshmukh. The protests were also supported by Anil Deshmukh, the former state home minister and local MLA.
Rahul Deshmukh had distributed pamphlets urging people to shun the community, accusing them of criminal activities. He had also planned a protest march on the same issue, but the police did not grant permission for it.
The incident began when the body of a young woman was found on railway tracks. Following her death, the Nagpur Government Railway Police arrested her boyfriend, who belongs to the community now being targeted by the politicians.
SP Nagpur Rural, Harssh A Poddar, stated that the situation is currently peaceful but the police remain on high alert with a strong presence. "The arrest was made due to the distribution of provocative and inciting pamphlets," said Poddar.
