Vidarbha, Gadchiroli, India: Under the Child Marriage Free India Campaign, 81,740 citizens from Gadchiroli district have taken an oath not to allow child marriage in their families, among their relatives, or in their villages so far.
As a partner organization of the 'Just Rights for Children Alliance,' the NGO 'Sparsh' has been implementing the 'Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' in Gadchiroli district for the past two years. Additionally, under the Child Marriage Free India Campaign, the 'Child Marriage Free District' initiative is being actively carried out in the region.
While the effective enforcement of laws is crucial, there is also an urgent need for widespread public awareness to eliminate child marriage. Such practices deprive children of their basic rights and rob them of their childhood. The fifth National Family Health Survey (2019-20) revealed that 23.3% of girls aged 20 to 24 were married before reaching the legal age of 18, highlighting a serious and concerning issue.
The Government of India passed the Child Marriage Prevention Act in 2006, which aims to prohibit child marriage and ensure the protection of children.
Due to the seriousness of this issue, the Government of India has launched a national campaign called 'Child Marriage Free India,' which will be inaugurated today.
