GMC Hospital Nagpur has requested permission from the Garden Department of the Municipal Corporation to cut down hundreds of trees for various development projects. The GMC Administration has submitted four separate requests to the Municipal Corporation, and the Garden Department has granted permission for three of them, adhering to the Forest Conservation and Promotion Act of the state.

In addition to seeking permission to cut down 18 trees, the GMC has also requested the Corporation to approve the felling of trees through a formal letter. The GMC is commemorating the Amrit Mahotsav year of its establishment and has been allocated over 500 crores by the state government for its expansion. This funding will be utilized for multiple construction projects within the GMC. To carry out these construction works, the Municipal Corporation has been approached with four separate applications seeking permission to cut down trees.

As per the Municipal Corporation's approval, the GMC Administration intends to cut down a total of 481 trees. Out of this number, 187 trees will be removed for the construction of a 400-room capacity hostel, 86 trees for a new 80-room paying ward, 190 trees for the new Radiology department centre, and 18 trees in the lawn in front of the dean's office.

According to available information, three out of the four applications submitted to the Municipal Corporation have been granted permission, considering the provisions outlined in the state's Forest Protection and Promotion Act. As part of the approval, the GMC has been directed to plant 4203 new trees in place of the 187 trees, 2149 trees in place of the 86 trees, and 676 trees in place of the 18 trees, with the responsibility to maintain them for the next seven years. Furthermore, the GMC administration has planned to plant approximately 7,000 new trees within the campus during the current monsoon season as compensation for the trees being cut down.
