Nagpur, India: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is likely to upgrade its Trauma Care Centre due to a significant increase in patient admissions. Originally established with a capacity of 70 beds, the centre has expanded to accommodate 120 beds, a necessity highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic when its critical utility was demonstrated.

The Trauma Care Centre was conceptualized in 2012, with the rising number of road accidents in the region. It officially opened when then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the centre. Currently, it features facilities, including an advanced operation theatre, three Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wards, and one general ward.

Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, Dean of GMCH, stated, "This centre is witnessing a patient flow that exceeds its capacity, leading to an increased burden on our staff. While our team is competent, the current number of beds is insufficient to meet the demand. To address this issue, we have planned for an upgrade."

The upgrade includes the addition of a new floor to the existing structure, which would significantly enhance the centre’s capacity. Dr. Gajbhiye noted that patients from the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital are also referred to the Trauma Centre, where they receive prompt emergency care thanks to the availability of Interventional Radiology, CT scans, X-rays, sonography, MRIs, and other essential services all under one roof.

The facility is structured with the ground floor housing the Casualty Department, Radiology, and an operation theatre. The first floor accommodates two operation theatres, a surgical ICU ward, and a drug store, while the second floor consists of two ICU wards and one general ward. Additional amenities include a blood bank and a physiotherapy unit, as well as male and female wards.

With the installation of a skywalk, the transfer of patients from the Casualty Department to the Trauma Centre has become more efficient, further enhancing the centre's capabilities in providing critical care.
