Due to the rise in criminal activity in the region, a police chowky close to the Santra Market gate of Nagpur railway station has become a contentious and political issue. Residents are calling for its reinstatement. As a result of the chowky's removal to make room for Mahametro construction, the east-side gate of the railway station is now dangerous and there have been more instances involving vagrants and criminals. Concerns have increased as a result of the recent murder of a guy on platform 4.
Locals urged Senior Inspector Hrishikesh Ghadge of the Ganeshpeth police station to restart the chowky during a meeting with him that was organised by NCP leader Nutan Rewatkar. During the meeting, Rewatkar was accompanied by citizens' representatives.
The chowky was taken down, according to Ghadge, since it was built on encroached territory. He also mentioned that Cotton Market already has a chowky and that the Bajeria neighbourhood should also have one.
However, locals have claimed that someone with political connections is allegedly encroaching on the former site of the chowky, known as Rege Chowky. Residents are quite concerned about the situation surrounding the demolished police chowky, which highlights the need for better security measures and an end to the protracted debate.
