Nagpur, India: To tackle the rising number of road fatalities, the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra, has directed all police units to strictly enforce helmet usage across the state. The new rule makes it mandatory for both two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers to wear helmets at all times.
As per the directive, violators will face fines, with separate penalties for riders and passengers found without helmets. This move aims to reduce deaths caused by head injuries, a leading factor in road fatalities. In Nagpur alone, over 300 people died in road accidents last year, many due to not wearing helmets.
To ensure strict compliance, the police have upgraded the e-challan system, allowing separate fines for both offenders. Traffic police across Maharashtra have been instructed to prioritize enforcement of the helmet mandate under Sections 128 and 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Officials believe the new guidelines will significantly impact pillion riders, who often ignore helmet safety. Nagpur Traffic Police have affirmed their commitment to implementing the rules effectively to enhance road safety.
This initiative reflects Maharashtra’s dedication to reducing preventable injuries and saving lives on the roads.
