The Abhay Mantri bench presided over the hearing. After the university's vice-chancellor resigned, Bhimraya Metri, a former director of IIM Nagpur, was unceremoniously named vice-chancellor.
During Republic Day celebrations, the students displayed banners in protest of this. Niranjan Kumar and other pupils were consequently expelled. Niranjan Kumar appealed the university's judgment in a petition. On February 16, the court had halted the university's decree of expulsion.
