The suspension, effective immediately, came after the Maldives government distanced itself from the offensive remarks made by the ministers, Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid. The dispute arose on social media in the aftermath of Prime Minister Modi's photographs from Lakshadweep.

The Indian High Commission in Male raised concerns with the Maldivian Foreign Office about the comments, prompting a response from the Maldives government. In an official statement, the government clarified that the derogatory remarks were personal opinions and did not represent the official stance of the Maldivian government. The statement emphasized the importance of responsibly exercising freedom of expression and pledged to act against those making such offensive remarks.

The controversy erupted when photographs of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep gained attention on social media, leading to comparisons with the Maldives as a tourist destination. Maldivian MP Zahid Rameez expressed scepticism about competition and made critical comments about the cleanliness and services in India. Ministers Shiuna and Shareef disparaged Modi, referring to him as a "clown" and a "puppet." Minister Majid highlighted challenges faced by India in competing with the Maldives in beach tourism.

The offensive social media posts, which have since been deleted, sparked outrage in India and the Maldives. Former Maldivian Presidents and other prominent figures condemned the remarks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with India. The Maldives National Party strongly criticized the "racist and derogatory comments," urging the government to take necessary action against those involved.
