The Indian government has officially granted Marathi Classic Language status, bringing joy to millions in Maharashtra. The long-awaited decision was made on the first day of Navratri, recognizing Marathi's rich literary heritage alongside 11 other languages.

The Government of India has officially granted Marathi the status of a "Classic Language." This announcement was made on the first day of Navratri, Thursday, delighting the 120 million Marathi speakers in Maharashtra.

The decision, which also includes 11 other languages such as Pali, Bangla, Asomia, and Prakrit, was revealed by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, on his social media platform, X.

 

 

The demand for this recognition has been ongoing for several years, with numerous writers and political leaders advocating for the status. They highlighted important literary works like Leelacharitra, Dmyaneshwari, and Viveksindhu to support their case, showcasing Marathi's rich cultural and literary heritage.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cultural Affairs Minister Gajendra Sinh Shekhawat for their support in achieving this milestone for the Marathi language.
