Nagpur, India: The Orthopedics Department at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH or Mayo) earned approximately ₹3.64 crore in the past year by performing 95% of its surgeries under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. This included 64 hip replacements and 88 bipolar hip replacements.
The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana now benefits not only citizens below and above the poverty line but also citizens holding white ration cards. Under this scheme, citizens receive health coverage of up to ₹25 lakh.
Under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Faisal, the head of the orthopedics department at IGGMCH, a total of 1,863 surgeries were performed between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Of these, 1,231 surgeries (66%) were carried out under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, generating a revenue of ₹3,64,60,750 for the hospital administration.
Due to the department's efforts, 554 out of 632 surgeries that were not covered under these schemes were carried out free of charge for the patients.
