The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has presented a proposal to the Maharashtra Government, requesting the allocation of 150 electric buses under the Central Government's PM E-Bus program.
The PM E-Bus initiative, which was previously announced by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aims to procure 10,000 electric buses as part of efforts to phase out traditional gasoline-powered buses, which contribute significantly to pollution. The proposal for the electric buses has received approval from Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhary and has been forwarded to the Urban Development Department for further processing.
According to the established procedure, the NMC must formally present its proposal to the State Government, which will then compile the comprehensive demand from all cities and submit it to the Central Government. NMC currently operates the 'Aapli Bus' city transport service and maintains a fleet of 528 buses. This fleet includes 362 diesel buses, comprising 167 standard buses, 150 Midland buses, and 45 mini-buses, as well as 70 retrofitted CNG buses and 96 electric buses.
The NMC's Transport Department is presently in the process of implementing a policy to transition public bus services from conventional diesel fuel to non-conventional alternatives.
