Given that there wouldn't be many Indian athletes competing on Sunday night in Paris, India appeared a little calm after winning its first bronze medal in the morning.
However, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the chief medical officer for the Indian contingent, found himself hopping on an official Olympic shuttle bus to travel the 16 km across the City of Lights to the red clay courts of Roland Garros, where N Balaji and Rohan Bopanna were engaged in a late first-round match.
After the match, which ended close to midnight, he spent thirty minutes tending to the two tennis Olympians. At 12:30 am, he started his last assignment of the day, which was speaking with me.
Dr. Pardiwala explained the IOA's decision to appoint a dedicated central medical team for India's 117-strong contingent. "This year the IOA was keen to enhance medical support services for athletes and include a central medical team that would oversee all aspects of recovery and rehabilitation, mental conditioning, sports nutrition, and sleep optimisation," she said. In previous Olympics, medical professionals and physiotherapists would accompany individual athletes or teams.
