Nagpur, India: Residents of Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, and Bhandara experienced mild tremors on Wednesday morning due to a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Mulugu in Telangana. The quake was recorded at 7:27 AM by the National Centre for Seismology. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were reported in the affected regions.
Light vibrations were felt in parts of Nagpur, consistent with the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) observation that tremors are often experienced up to 300 km from an earthquake's epicentre. In Gadchiroli, which is close to Telangana, residents reported tremors at 7:29 AM. The district's Disaster Management Office confirmed this and noted it was the third instance in the past two years.
Chandrapur, particularly Ballarpur and other tehsils near Telangana, also experienced mild shaking. The Chandrapur and Gadchiroli Collectors, Vinay Gowda and Sanjay Daine reassured residents, requesting them to stay calm and move to open spaces if such incidents occur again.
In Gondia, residents noticed vibrations around 7:30 AM, prompting some to leave their homes. According to District Disaster Management Officer Rajan Choubey, this was the fourth such tremor reported in Gondia since 2015. Similarly, light tremors were recorded in Bhandara, but no damage or injuries were reported.
Authorities across these districts have emphasized vigilance and preparedness, especially in seismic-prone areas like Gadchiroli, to ensure public safety in case of future events.
