Nagpur, India: As Nagpur continues to face extreme temperatures, District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar has urged workers and residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the ongoing heatwave. The district is experiencing soaring temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the heatwave to persist for several more days.

Key Guidelines to Stay Safe:

• Avoid Midday Heat: Dr. Itankar has advised all outdoor workers to avoid working during peak heat hours, typically between 12 pm and 4 pm. It is recommended to schedule work during early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are lower.

• Hydration Is Vital: The Collector emphasised the importance of staying hydrated. Residents are urged to drink plenty of water throughout the day and consume fluids like buttermilk, coconut water, and lemon water to help maintain hydration levels.

• Protection from the Sun: Workers and residents are advised to cover their heads with a cloth, hat, or scarf when stepping outside to prevent sun exposure. It is also important to wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothing to reduce the risk of heatstroke.

• Employers’ Responsibility: Employers, especially those in construction or other outdoor industries, are encouraged to ensure workers have access to shaded rest areas and drinking water. Breaks should be provided during the hottest parts of the day.

• Travel and Commuting Tips: For those who must travel, it is recommended to carry water and take frequent breaks to stay cool. Consuming seasonal fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, and citrus fruits can also help keep the body hydrated.

• Indoor Safety: Residents are advised to keep their homes cool by closing windows and curtains during the day. Using fans or air conditioning can help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

• Special Care for Vulnerable Groups: Pregnant women, children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions like heart disease or hypertension are at higher risk. Dr. Itankar urged these groups to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and stay in cool, shaded environments.
