Nagpur, India: As the Ganesh festival is set to begin on September 7, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has decided to waive all fees for Ganesh Mandals this year to encourage eco-friendly celebrations across the city. This decision follows directives from the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Key Highlights of the Decision:

  1. Fee Waivers: The NMC has announced a complete waiver of application verification and inspection fees of ₹200, along with deposits ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 for Ganesh Mandals. This waiver is aimed at promoting a more inclusive and environment-friendly celebration.

  2. Eco-Friendly Guidelines: In line with the directives from the Central Pollution Control Board and the High Court, the NMC has issued several guidelines to ensure an eco-friendly Ganesh festival: Ban on Plaster of Paris (POP) Idols: The manufacturing, sale, and use of POP idols are strictly prohibited. Devotees are encouraged to use clay idols made from eco-friendly materials. One Idol Per Complex: Residential complexes are encouraged to adopt the 'One Complex, One Ganapati' concept, limiting the installation of idols to one per complex. Controlled Noise Levels: Noise levels during processions must adhere to specified standards to prevent noise pollution.

  3. Restrictions on Idol Immersions: The immersion of idols in natural water bodies is banned. Devotees must use artificial ponds provided by the NMC for all immersions. Public Ganesh Mandals with idols over 4 feet tall are required to arrange immersions outside municipal limits and obtain necessary permissions for processions.

  4. Encouragement of Health and Awareness Campaigns: Ganesh Mandals are encouraged to prioritize health-related activities and awareness campaigns during the festival, focusing on issues like malaria, dengue, and waste segregation.

  5. Preparation of Immersion Sites: The NMC will ensure adequate lighting and safety measures at artificial immersion sites. This includes setting up barricades around natural water bodies and deploying fire safety personnel and swimmers for emergencies.

  6. Compliance with Regulations: While fees have been waived, Ganesh Mandals must comply with all existing rules and regulations. This includes adhering to fire safety guidelines, licensing requirements, and government bans on plastic and thermocol.
