Nagpur, India- In a ceremony held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) honored 50 exemplary cleanliness workers for their dedicated service. The event was organized to mark Martyrs' Day for Sanitation Workers, a day commemorating the sacrifice of sanitation workers who fought for their rights.

The ceremony, held at the NMC headquarters, was presided over by Dr Gajendra Mahalle, Head of the Solid Waste Management Department and Deputy Commissioner. Key attendees included Chief Sanitation Officer Mr Rohidas Rathod, Senior Health Inspector Mr Lokesh Basanwar, and various zonal and sanitation inspectors.

Dr. Mahalle emphasized the significance of July 31, which marks the day in 1954 when Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a movement in Delhi demanding justice for sanitation workers. During this protest, Mr. Bhoomsingh, a sanitation worker, was martyred. This day is observed across the country in his memory, honoring his contribution by recognizing outstanding permanent sanitation workers annually.

Dr. Mahalle encouraged zonal officers to organize monthly events to recognize the efforts of sanitation workers and maintain cleanliness and health in the city. The NMC has been consistently honouring exemplary workers, except during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ceremony was conducted by Mr. Arun Turkhel, and Mr. Rajiv Rajurkar delivered the vote of thanks.
