Nagpur, India: Nagpur is facing a significant delay in the passport verification process, with over 2,200 cases pending across various police stations. While the process is supposed to be completed within 15 days, some cases have been pending for as long as 6 months, raising concerns about inefficiencies in the system.
Data indicates that 2,276 passport verification cases are unresolved. Among the worst-hit police stations are Jaripatka, Pachpaoli, and Nandanvan, with 455, 287, and 271 pending cases, respectively. Beltarodi, Kotwali, and Sadar police stations also reported high numbers of pending verifications.
Meanwhile, Pardi police station stands out as the only station with zero pending cases, showcasing efficient handling of applications. Authorities cite multiple reasons for the growing backlog:
- 1. Technical Glitches: The updated Passport 2.0 system has been a significant contributor to delays. If an incorrect password is entered, the system locks access for 15 days, stalling progress.
- 2. Additional Documentation: In areas like Jaripatka, where many residents have migrated from Pakistan or neighbouring countries, applicants are often required to submit additional documents. This increases the time required for verification.
- 3. Special Branch Backlog: Apart from pending cases at police stations, around 3,000 cases are stuck at the Special Branch (SB) office, further exacerbating the issue.
When an applicant submits a request for a passport, the police verification request is sent to the Special Branch (SB) office. The SB then forwards the file to the local police station for verification. Once completed, the file is returned to the SB office and subsequently sent to the passport office. Any delay at any stage can disrupt the entire timeline.
The delays are causing significant inconvenience for citizens, many of whom have had to put travel plans on hold. “The prolonged waiting period is frustrating and raises serious questions about the efficiency of the system,” said one applicant.
The rising backlog has sparked calls for immediate intervention. Suggestions include better training for personnel, improved coordination between police stations and the SB office, and system upgrades to prevent technical glitches.
