Nagpur, India: The Traffic Branch of Nagpur City Police has developed a strategy to manage the increased crowds in the wholesale market area ahead of Diwali by prohibiting four-wheelers in the busiest parts of the city. Deputy Commissioner of Police Archit Chandak announced the new vehicle movement plan for Itwari, Gandhibagh, and Central Avenue to facilitate smooth traffic flow and prevent congestion.

The restrictions and regulations in the busy market area will be in effect until November 5, having started on October 22. This measure aims to provide shoppers with a hassle-free experience and peace of mind while shopping. According to the Traffic Branch notification, goods vehicles will be permitted to load and unload from 11 PM to 8 AM.

Under the plan, four-wheelers will be completely banned from traveling on the routes from Shahid Square to Maskasath Square, Shahid Square to Teen Naal Square, and from Nanga Putla Square to Tonga Stand Square. Only two-wheelers and bicycles will be allowed on these stretches, and they will operate in a one-way direction.

Another key area in the market, from Shahid Square via Kirana Oli to Maskasath Square, will be designated solely for pedestrians. Cycle rickshaws, two-wheelers, and other vehicles will be directed to travel from Shahid Square to Maskasath Square via Bharat Mata Square, or they can take a right turn from Shahid Square towards Old Motor Stand Square, following a one-way traffic flow.

The route from Teen Naal Square to Old Bhandara Road leading to Shahid Square will be closed to cycle rickshaws, motorcycles, and other vehicles. Pedestrians can use the road towards Bharat Mata Square. The stretch on Bharat Mata Square will remain open for both upward and downward movement.

Traders have been encouraged to refrain from using four-wheelers and to use two-wheelers instead during the Diwali period to help reduce congestion. Additionally, parking on Central Avenue during this time will be limited to a single lane.

During peak evening hours, the busy Gandhibagh and Itwari markets experience significant chaos due to mixed vehicular traffic. Encroachments in the market area have also taken up parking spaces and footpaths, exacerbating the situation. Furthermore, the crisscross movement of vehicles contributes to traffic jams, while the densely populated area with narrow roads worsens the congestion.
