Nagpur, India- The deaths of two laborers caused by an ammonia gas leak at Balaji Ice Factory in Uppalwadi, Nagpur, have been officially registered as a crime. This tragic incident, which happened in January, was initially treated as an accident for about six months. However, on Wednesday, the Kapil Nagar Police Station filed a case against the factory owner, Vijay Sahu, under the law for causing death due to negligence.

The explosion from the ammonia gas leak was so powerful that it shattered the windows of several nearby buildings and vehicles, creating panic among the residents of Uppalwadi. The two workers who died were Dugarsingh Rawat (70) and Guman Luman Singh (45). Two other workers, Shravan Baghel (44) and Raja Arya (23), were seriously injured.

The delay in registering the crime was due to waiting for the Factory Inspector's report. This report was first given to the Collector's office and was supposed to be sent to the police next. However, for unknown reasons, it took a long time to reach the Kapil Nagar Police Station.

This incident is not the only industrial accident in Nagpur recently. The deaths of labourers at Solar Industries in Kondhali and an explosion at Chamundi Explosives have also raised serious concerns. These incidents have been discussed in the Assembly, with the opposition criticizing the State Government for poor safety and monitoring, which led to the deaths of 18 laborers in total.

In the case of the Balaji Ice Factory, the negligence resulted in the deaths of Dugarsingh Rawat and Guman Luman Singh and severe injuries to Shravan Baghel and Raja Arya. The legal process now aims to ensure justice for the victims and to push for stricter safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. The delay in registering the case highlights the need for faster legal and regulatory actions to protect workers' lives.
