Nagpur, India: The expansion of Nagpur's Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport has taken a significant step forward with the transfer of 786 hectares of land to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). The land acquisition will help clear the way for the airport’s development.

District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar took quick action, demolishing 40-50 houses in Viktubaba Nagar, which is part of the land needed for the expansion. The area was a challenge as several villages, including Shivangaon, were located in the MIHAN zone. To address this, the government had provided compensation to affected families, offering them plots and homes in the nearby Chinchbhuvan area.

Dr. Itankar confirmed that the demolished houses were not being lived in, and many of the residents had already received new homes. The land will now be used to build a new parallel runway and taxiway, part of a larger plan to improve the airport. GMR Airports Limited (GAL) will begin working on the airport’s facelift in April 2025.

This expansion is part of efforts to improve the city's infrastructure and aviation services, ensuring that the airport can handle more flights and cargo in the future.
