In a significant development ahead of the general elections, Nitish Kumar stepped down as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Sunday, delivering a major setback to the Mahagathbandhan alliance in India. Kumar formally submitted his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan.

Addressing reporters after the resignation, Nitish Kumar explained that he had also urged the Governor to dissolve the Mahagathbandhan alliance in Bihar. The JD(U) leader expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the alliance, which comprises Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, and three Left parties, stating that the situation was not conducive for him to continue.

"I refrained from making comments for a considerable period because the situation within the Mahagathbandhan alliance was not satisfactory. After considering opinions and suggestions from various quarters, including my party workers, I have decided to resign today, bringing an end to the present government," Nitish Kumar stated.

The BJP is expected to submit its 'Letter of Support' to JD(U) and CM Nitish Kumar to assert its claim in forming the subsequent alliance government. The oath-taking ceremony is anticipated to take place at 4 pm.
