The Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, declared that satellite-based tolling systems would soon be implemented on India's national highways. Gadkari stated in a Rajya Sabha speech that the novel tolling scheme would be put into place by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) by March 2024.
The World Bank was recently informed by India of notable advancements in expediting the delivery of exports at land ports and cutting down on wait times at toll plazas. The average wait time at toll plazas has decreased dramatically to just 47 seconds when FASTag was implemented, which is a considerable improvement over the prior wait of 714 seconds.
The Indian government has presented its intentions to improve the nation's infrastructure to the World Bank. Between April and November, there was a roughly 10% increase in the construction and extension of national highways when compared to the same time in 2011–2023. Nonetheless, news reports suggest that this year's allotment of new building projects has decreased significantly by 52%.
