50,000 Nagpur Residents Affected by Power Cuts Following Intense Thunderstorm

Nagpur, India- A heavy rainstorm with thunder and lightning disrupted South and East Nagpur on Thursday evening, leaving over 50,000 residents struggling without electricity. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) reported that three main 33 KV feeder lines in Wardhaman Nagar, Pardi, and Besa experienced power outages due to the storm.

As a result, areas including Wardhaman Nagar, Pardi, Subhan Nagar, Chinteshwar Nagar, Gandhi-bagh Garden, Kharbi, Bahadura, Narsala, Umred Road, Umargaon, Binaki, Om Sai Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Wanjara, Ambe Nagar, Shanti Nagar, and Kalamna were without power for several hours. MSEDCL workers were busy late into the evening trying to restore electricity. The storm also knocked down 12 high-tension poles and 10 low-tension poles at the Wardhaman Nagar sub-station.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) Fire and Emergency Department received over 15 calls across the city about fallen trees due to the thunderstorm. Firefighters responded to incidents in Shesh Nagar, Kharbi Road, Ganjipeth, Mahakali Nagar, Chhapru Nagar, Somwari Quarters, Ayodhya Nagar, Thaore Colony, Wardhaman Nagar, Hirwi Nagar Square, Central Jail Road, Ajni, and Pardi. The fallen trees caused traffic jams and damaged many vehicles. The NMC has urged residents to report any fallen trees to the Disaster Management Control Room at 0712-2567029, 0712-2567777, 0712-2540299, 0712-2540188, 101, 108, or 7030972200. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted dry weather for the Vidarbha region starting from May 17 and continuing for the next few days.
