Nagpur, India- A protest broke out at Jai Bhim Chowk in the Nandanvan area on Thursday afternoon after a woman died in a road accident. Hundreds of residents and the woman's family gathered at the accident site, demanding compensation and the arrest of the driver responsible. The protestors, led by Duneshwar Pethe, City Unit President of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), brought the woman's body to the spot after the post-mortem, causing major traffic disruptions.
The victim, Dolly Borkar (35), lived in Pawanshakti Nagar, Wathoda. On Wednesday at around 11:45 am, she was riding on a scooter with her husband, Rajesh Borkar, and their two-year-old son, Harsh. As they were travelling on the road between Bhim Chowk and KDK T-point, an Eicher mini truck (MH-49/BZ-2472) tried to overtake them and hit their scooter. The impact caused them to fall off, resulting in serious injuries. The truck driver fled the scene.
People nearby quickly took the injured family to Anandam Hospital in Shrikrishna Nagar, but Dolly died during treatment. Nandanvan Police filed a hit-and-run case against the truck driver under various legal sections after taking a statement from Rajesh.
After the post-mortem at Government Medical College & Hospital, Dolly's family received her body. Along with residents and activists, they brought the body back to the accident site to protest. They expressed their grief and demanded action from the authorities.
The police arrived and detained the protestors. The family later took Dolly's body for the last rites.
