Top shuttler PV Sindhu will represent India as a female flag bearer at the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony in Paris. Simultaneously, Gagan Narang, the bronze medallist in shooting at the London Olympics, succeeded Mary Kom, the renowned boxer, as India's Chef-de-Mission for the Summer Olympics on Monday.
Following Mary Kom's departure, PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), disclosed that Narang's promotion from the deputy CDM role was decided upon automatically.
"My young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom, and I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent," PT Usha stated in a news statement. Also says, "I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in Paris 2024 Olympic Games."
Before the Summer Games, Narang was the clear favorite to succeed him as the Indian contingent's next CDM. For personal reasons, six-time world champion Mary Kom resigned as CDM in April.
The IOA appointed six-time world champion Mary Kom to the prominent position in March. The athletes' welfare during competition is the Chef-de-Mission's responsibility. At the Summer Games, the CDM handles player communication with the organizing body.
