Nagpur, India: The Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh (CRMS) will hold a protest on 25th February at the Divisional Railway Manager’s (DRM) office from 10 am to 5 pm. They are demanding better working conditions for loco pilots, assistant loco pilots, and train managers.
CRMS says there is a severe staff shortage, forcing workers to do long shifts without enough rest. They are asking railway officials to fill vacant posts and promote existing staff. The union is also protesting against unfair penalties given to workers for small mistakes.
One of their main concerns is the lack of rest. Workers should return to their headquarters within 36 hours and get enough time to recover after night shifts. Loco pilots now get only 14 hours of rest instead of the required 16, and running staff receive just six hours instead of eight.
Another issue is long working hours. While railway employees are supposed to work for eight hours, loco pilots sometimes have to work up to 11 hours. CRMS is asking for shorter duty hours—six hours for express trains and eight hours for freight trains.
The union is urging railway authorities to take action and improve working conditions for running staff.
