Nagpur, India: A 15-year-old girl was rescued from a house in the Bokara area under Koradi police station on Sunday, where she had been brought from Jharkhand to work as a domestic helper. The police have registered a case against the couple who allegedly subjected her to physical abuse and mistreatment.
The accused, a retired Navy officer, Umesh Kumar Shahu (68), and his wife Manju Shahu (64), brought the girl a few months ago to help with household chores due to Manju's health issues. However, the girl was reportedly beaten and mistreated for making mistakes while working. She was also confined to the house and could not communicate with anyone outside.
Neighbors, who witnessed the abuse, were unable to help as the girl was locked inside the house whenever the couple left. The abuse was discovered after the Child Rights Protection Committee received a tip-off and visited the home, rescuing the girl and informing Koradi Police.
The police have registered a case against the couple under the Protection of Child Rights Act. The girl has been sent to a juvenile home for her protection, and the investigation is ongoing.
