Saina Nehwal, a professional badminton player, recently admitted that she was unaware that javelin was an Olympic event until Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in 2021. This suggests that when a person is completely focused on one sport, it is almost impossible to learn about other sports.
"I discovered that athletics has this game as well when Neeraj won. Only when you see it will you get wisdom, right? How would you know if you can't see? I was unaware of the javelin throw. In an interview, Nehwal said to writer Shubhankar Mishra, "To be honest, I didn't know."
For there are numerous sports in athletics. I was just made aware of after the results were in. I'm positive that many were unaware of badminton. I was unaware of Prakash Sir's identity."
Nehal, an Olympian who competed for India three times and took home a bronze in 2012, stated that being the best in one's particular discipline is sufficient.
"You're so busy in your own profession, how much time do you spend immersed in something else? It's not like you don't want to know. If not, you'll constantly need to Google everything. It's more than sufficient if you're the best in your particular industry, the woman stated.
Nehwal's comments quickly gained widespread attention on social media, with some criticizing her for not knowing that the javelin is an Olympic sport.
