Nagpur, India: A next-generation AI-powered traffic management system is set to improve traffic flow in the city by adjusting signal timings based on real-time vehicle movement. This new system aims to reduce unnecessary waiting times and make commuting smoother.

As a pilot project, the Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) will be installed at 10 key locations in the next three months, including LAD Square, Abhyankar Square, Shraddhanandpeth Square, Ajit Bakery Square, Shankar Nagar Square, Bajaj Nagar Square, Laxmi Nagar Square, Alankar Square, Kachipura Square, and Deekshabhoomi Square. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Archit Chandak confirmed that the system will analyse vehicle movement daily and adjust traffic signals accordingly.

The Rs 200 crore project, approved by the State Government, is being implemented by Kerala-based company Keltron. It will use cameras and AI technology to monitor traffic patterns and regulate signals dynamically. Additionally, the system will introduce automatic violation detection, identifying signal jumping, helmetless riding, seatbelt violations, and stop-line crossings. Offenders will receive e-challans automatically, reducing the need for manual enforcement.

To enhance surveillance, 2,200 new IITMS cameras will be integrated with the city’s 4,500 existing CCTV cameras. The full upgrade of all traffic signals to this smart system is expected within a year, making traffic management more efficient and responsive.
