The Maharashtra Government has granted administrative approval for Stage II of the Sonegaon Lake beautification plan proposed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The government has released the first instalment of Rs 8.25 crore for the project. A high-powered committee, led by the Chief Secretary, reviewed the proposal submitted by the Municipal Commissioner and cleared the Rs 24.96 crore plan.

Recognizing the historical and ancient significance of Sonegaon Lake, the committee emphasized that the funds would contribute to its conservation and enhance its beauty. The NMC has undertaken lake conservation initiatives in the city to restore the pristine glory of water bodies.

The high-powered committee specified that 30% of the approved plan amount should be deposited with the NMC to facilitate the continuation of ongoing development works. The NMC's plan includes the construction of a protection wall on the southern part of Sonegaon Lake and further beautification work, such as laying lawns and amenities, to transform it into a potential tourist attraction along the southern, western, and eastern boundaries.

While the lake sees many visitors, the limited recreational space has been a significant drawback. The recent desilting work has increased water storage, and the NMC aims to address the lack of recreation by installing floodlights, creating a small garden, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The Department of Tourism and Culture, in approving Stage II of the Sonegaon Lake beautification plan, advised the Municipal Commissioner to ensure adherence to budgetary constraints and established norms during project implementation. The completion target for the beautification works is set for March 31, 2024.

Additionally, the NMC was instructed to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Temple Trust if any development or beautification work is planned on their premises. The District Collector is expected to facilitate an agreement between the Trust and NMC for the proper execution of the work. The NMC is also mandated to submit a quality assurance report upon completion of the project. Sonegaon Lake, constructed during the Bhonsala regime, holds historical significance as it served as a station for their cavalry.
