Sports officials who hold positions in international federations will have their age and tenure restrictions loosened under the government's proposed National Sports Governance Bill.
Before the draft bill is anticipated to be presented to Parliament during the budget session, this is one of the few modifications that will be made to it.
Sports officials' inability to serve in international sports bodies due to age and tenure constraints was one of the difficulties raised during consultations with different stakeholders, according to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
The draft policy has already loosened the 70-year age limit for NSF office bearers, stating that candidates should not be older than 70 when they run for office or seek a nomination. The tenure restriction has also been loosened.
A cooling-off period of four years is required for anyone who has held an office bearer of the NOC for more than two consecutive terms. However, the maximum number of terms an official may serve is not mentioned. The modifications will significantly loosen the requirements for officials hoping to join international federations.
