Nagpur, India: In a tragic incident in Mauja Pewtha, two men, Kamlesh Uike and Nitesh Bagbande, died from electric shock while allegedly trying to steal power lines. The incident occurred on the farm of Ashish Meshram, but Mahavitaran, the electricity distribution company, has clarified that it was not related to any fault in their system.
According to Mahavitaran, both local police and an electrical inspector confirmed that the men were attempting to cut and steal power lines when the accident happened. Ashish Meshram, the owner of the farm, stated that neither Kamlesh nor Nitesh was employed by him or had any authorization to be on his property. Meshram emphasized that the muddy conditions of the field, due to recent rains, provided no legitimate reason for anyone to be there.
Investigations revealed that a low-tension line had been previously cut near a cement pole on the farm, with the power supply already disconnected because of prior theft. The men reportedly entered the farm at midnight to steal the wires, and while cutting them from the cement pole, one wire likely came into contact with a live phase, causing the fatal shock.
Police reports confirmed that a fuse on a nearby transformer was blown, indicating an overload and supporting the theory that the men were electrocuted during their theft attempt. Mahavitaran reiterated that the incident was a result of the attempted theft and not due to a sudden fault in their power lines.
