Over-assuming responsibilities and ignoring our feelings can have a negative impact on our emotional and mental well-being. To prioritize and take care of ourselves, we must be self-aware and in tune with our thoughts and feelings.
Therapist Linda Meredith listed some potentially dangerous symptoms of over-responsibility and self-neglect.
1. We wind up putting the blame on ourselves for non-existent problems. We feel accountable for everything that goes wrong, which is why this occurs.
2. In the end, we put everyone else before ourselves. We never take care of ourselves as much as we should because of self-neglect brought on by this.
3. We end up bottling the painful emotions because we never deal with our own feelings. Sometimes, this might result in accidental lashouts.
4. We frequently sacrifice our own happiness in order to satisfy the happiness of others. Additionally, we lack confidence and frequently second-guess our decisions.
5. We enter a state of hypervigilance, interpret information, and descend into an overthinking spiral. As a result, we struggle to keep things in perspective.
