Nagpur, India: Vinay Bhange, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi's (VBA) candidate for South West Nagpur, has launched a protest calling for the renaming of Rahate Colony Metro Station to Deekshabhoomi Metro Station. Bhange’s initiative aims to better represent Nagpur’s cultural landmarks and simplify travel for those visiting the revered site of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Deekshabhoomi. The protest was initiated on 14th October 2024.

Deekshabhoomi is one of Nagpur's most iconic locations, drawing thousands of visitors from around India who wish to pay homage to Dr. Ambedkar and his role in social reform and Buddhism. Bhange emphasized that naming a metro station after Deekshabhoomi would not only honour Dr Ambedkar but also guide out-of-town visitors more directly to this significant destination. Currently, many visitors arriving at the airport or railway station find themselves relying on maps or local inquiries, which can be challenging, especially for elderly visitors.

“With a direct connection from the airport or Nagpur railway station labelled as ‘Deekshabhoomi Metro Station,’ visitors would find it much easier to locate this important landmark,” Bhange stated. He highlighted the importance of a clear, intuitive transport route for Nagpur’s visitors, who often have difficulty navigating the city without local assistance.

This proposal by Bhange is more than a practical request—it’s a move towards honouring Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and raising awareness of Nagpur’s rich historical and cultural landscape. If adopted, the renaming could create a lasting impact on tourism in the area, fostering a sense of respect and admiration for Deekshabhoomi.
