Vinesh Phogat, a former wrestler who is now a politician, received a notification from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Wednesday for his whereabouts failing. The NADA requested an explanation within 14 days.
After being disqualified from the Olympics in Paris in August, Vineesh declared her retirement, claiming she lacked the strength to compete. The 29-year-old made her decision public on social media prior to her 50kg category gold medal bout. She was disqualified for being 100gm overweight.
Following a heartbreaking Olympic campaign in Paris, where she advanced for the final but was disqualified before her gold-medal match due to her weight, Vinesh had announced her retirement from the sport.
Along with fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia, Vinesh has joined the Congress party and is running from the Julana constituency in the forthcoming Haryana Assembly election. Vinesh must either own up to her mistake or produce proof that she spent around an hour and a half there.
One whereabouts failure does not automatically translate into a breach of anti-doping regulations, it should be noted. For NADA to charge an athlete, there must be three whereabouts failures (missing tests or filing failures) in a 12-month period.
