140+ Posts Found Spreading Hate After Nagpur Violence, Action Initiated

Nagpur, India: The Maharashtra Cyber Department has found more than 140 social media posts and videos with objectionable content linked to the recent violence in Nagpur. These posts, aimed at creating communal unrest, were uploaded on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

To stop the spread of this content, the authorities have sent notices under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology (IT) Act 2000 to take down the posts immediately. Notices have also been issued under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to identify the people operating these accounts.

The Maharashtra Cyber Department and Nagpur City Cyber Police identified multiple accounts posting harmful content related to the violence that occurred on Monday. The content was designed to hurt the sentiments of a particular religious group and create tension between communities.

Officials warned that sharing such content is illegal and threatens peace. Strict action will be taken against those spreading provocative material online.

Authorities have urged people to be careful when sharing information online and to avoid spreading unverified content. They emphasised that using social media to disrupt communal harmony will lead to legal consequences.

So far, 69 people, including Minority Democratic Party leader Fahim Khan and eight Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers, have been arrested in connection with the violence. The 8 people who surrendered are released on bail soon after the legal documentation in police station.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, said that strict action will be taken against those who attacked police officers and caused chaos.

On Monday night, mobs damaged vehicles, throwed petrol bombs and stones at police, and attacked houses. Thirty-three police personnel, including three senior officers, were injured during the unrest.

The violence was triggered by rumours that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests led by the VHP, demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

In a shocking incident, a woman constable was allegedly misbehaved with and an attempt was made to disrobe her during the violence, according to a police report.

The Maharashtra Cyber Department is keeping a close watch on social media to prevent further trouble and maintain peace.
